MAYVILLE — The Chautauqua County Legislature took a moment during its meeting this week to honor some local heroes.

A Commendation was issued to the Sheriff’s Office for the rescue of a 6-year-old girl who was found by a K-9 after a two-hour search Aug. 17 in the town of Mina. She had gotten tangled in some bushes and was unable to pull herself out.

Along with the Sheriff’s Office, members of the Sherman, Findley Lake and Clymer fire departments, and the county’s Emergency Medical Services were also on hand during the commendation.

Legislators Billy Torres, D-Jamestown, and Marty Proctor, R-Mina, presented the proclamation.

Among the members of the Sheriff’s Office present were Sheriff James Quattrone, Deputy Chad Wright and K-9 Link.

“The Chautauqua County Legislature honors and commends the emergency life-saving efforts of all members and agencies involved in the rescue,” Proctor said.

Quattrone noted that all the agencies worked together.

“If you pulled up at that scene, you would have seen people all over the place,” he said. “While Deputy Wright and K-9 Link were the ones who located the girl, it was really a team effort where many people were out searching. We’re fortunate in Chautauqua County to have a great fire service.”

The child was found about a half-mile from her home on Route 430 and had been missing for several hours. She was relatively unharmed, but did receive some scrapes from the brush. After being treated at the scene, she was returned to her family.

Starting at $2.99/week.
