‘No Problems’ After SW Takes Cautious Approach To Threat
“We were being overly, overly cautious.”
That was the message Superintendent Maureen Donahue told the Southwestern Central School Board on Tuesday in reference to the schools being in close proximity to a store mentioned in a threat.
As reported previously by The Post-Journal, the Jamestown Police Department on Friday said it was aware of a message being shared on social media that alluded to a threat to occur Tuesday, the one-month anniversary of the mass shooting at a Buffalo grocery store. Locally, the threat mentioned Tops Markets on Foote Avenue in Jamestown and Walmart on Fairmount Avenue in Lakewood.
“You know there was a threat in our community,” Donahue said. “We didn’t want to stop whatever we were doing with kids, but we certainly wanted to be safe. We brought everybody inside and everyone was really cooperative.”
Specifics on what the threat contained weren’t released. Lakewood-Busti police and the FBI also were looking into the threat, though the FBI did not believe it to be credible.
A Lakewood-Busti patrol vehicle could be seen parked outside Walmart on Tuesday morning; police in Lakewood-Busti and Jamestown had indicated previously that patrols would be beefed up near the stores.
Previously, in a message to parents, Donahue said Southwestern’s Flag Day parade was to take place inside the school Tuesday with no outside visitors. She also said that the American Legion was permitted to be involved in the parade.
“Flag Day was awesome,” Donahue said. “Our American Legion always works really closely with us on it — kids love it. We also held our senior parade. Today, we were really careful with the threat at Walmart. People were very respectful and (there were) no problems.”
Local police and the FBI have been looking into the post being shared on social media.
Anyone with information regarding the social media post is asked to contact police. Information can be left at the Jamestown Police Department tip line at 716-483-TIPS (8477).
