Countywide, Nursing Home COVID Deaths Increase
A day after reporting one of its lowest new COVID totals in about a month, the Chautauqua County Department of Health noted six new virus-related fatalities and 95 new confirmed cases.
To date there have been 117 people who died due to complications of the virus and 6,917 confirmed cases.
According to the county Health Department, four people between the ages of 40 and 49 have died with the virus; three between 50 and 59; nine between 60 and 69; 27 between 70 and 79; 44 between 80 and 89; and 30 over the age of 90.
Based on state Health Department information, 50 residents of nursing homes within the county have died with the virus, an increase of three in one day and 10 in the last week. Seven of the deaths were reported at Absolut Care of Westfield; 24 at Chautauqua Nursing and Rehab in Dunkirk; 11 at Heritage Green in Greenhurst; and eight at Heritage Village in Gerry.
Of the new cases, from information collected Wednesday, 26 come from the Dunkirk zip code, six in Fredonia, 23 in Jamestown, five in Falconer and four in Lakewood.
There are currently 33 people with the virus in the hospital, a drop of five from numbers released a day earlier by the county. The number of those in quarantine did increase, from 1,869 to 1,885.
Meanwhile, Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Thursday announced the lowest statewide COVID-19 daily positivity rate (4.38%) since Nov. 28. The rate is calculated by comparing the number of confirmed cases to total tests administered across New York.
The positivity rate has come down in recent weeks.
“The good news is New York’s numbers continue to show progress as the holiday surge recedes,” Cuomo said. “Our positivity rate has been steadily declining, and that success is a reflection of New Yorkers’ commitment to defeating this beast. We know the weapon to win the war is the vaccine and more and more needles are getting in arms every day, but the federal supply is still not enough.
“This has been a long road, but I commend New Yorkers for their determination through it all. As we enter into Super Bowl weekend, we cannot get cocky with COVID — we must remain vigilant: be smart, wear a mask, socially distance and stay New York Tough.”
In Chautauqua County, the positivity rate over a seven-day average was 5.6% on Thursday, a drop from the 6.1% a day earlier and the 13.4% reported over the Jan. 9 weekend.
In Cattaraugus County, 32 new COVID cases were announced Wednesday, marking 3,838 confirmed to date. There were currently 350 active cases along with 39 people with the virus in the hospital, 78 deaths and a seven-day positivity rate of 3.8%.
