County Nears 1,500 Total COVID Cases; Adds 47 Over Weekend
Chautauqua County is closing in on 1,500 total cases of COVID-19 since March, the county Health Department announced over the weekend.
The county announced 26 new cases on Saturday and another 21 on Sunday, bringing the one-week total to 168 cases — or an average of 24 per day. Because the county does not release additional information on the weekends, more information about the cases are expected to be released with Monday’s numbers. There have been 1,492 cases since March.
In neighboring Cattaraugus County, health officials logged 102 COVID-19 cases and one death over three days, announcing 34 new infections on Saturday and a 24th death since the pandemic began in March late on Friday.
“She was a 93 year old female who developed respiratory failure and was unable to overcome her illness despite aggressive medical treatment,” the department said. “We extend our deepest condolences to her family and the entire Cattaraugus County community.”
As of Saturday, there were 283 cases with 18 hospitalized in the county. There have been 522 recoveries and 829 total cases.
Meanwhile, school districts across Chautauqua County continue to monitor the numbers closely. Several — Southwestern and Gowanda central schools — announced that they would transition to remote learning last week.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo, in a press briefing on Sunday from Manhattan, re-affirmed that school districts will have jurisdiction over their ability to continue learning in-person or remotely up until a district’s surrounding region registers a 3% infection rate on a seven-day rolling average.
