FREDONIA — The historic Fredonia Opera House is preparing to reverberate with the sound of laughter when it hosts national comedian Lucas Bohn next month.

Bohn will perform his one-man show “Lesson Plans to Late Night” at the 9 Church St. entertainment venue Friday, April 13, at 7:30 p.m., highlighting his professional journey from a fifth-grade school teacher to a full-time, nationally touring comedian.

Although he started performing comedy as a hobby while he was working full-time as a teacher, Bohn has gone on to amass an impressive resume that includes appearances alongside several notable entertainers such as Jimmy Fallon, Dave Chappelle and Kevin Hart, as being named Campus Activities Magazine’s “Comedian of the Year” in 2013. In his April 13 performance at Fredonia Opera House, Bohn will weave live storytelling and a multimedia presentation into his stand-up comedy.

“‘Lesson Plans to Late Night’ is my story about transitioning from elementary school teacher to professional comedian,” he said “The show is hysterical because not only do I perform stand-up but I also incorporate pictures from my journey. Everything from student work to funny signs I see while touring to pictures of my family are included in the presentation.”

Bohn has performed for Fortune 500 companies, at colleges, theaters and comedy clubs throughout the U.S., and for five different international cruise lines. He has been hired by Scholastic, PBS and multiple radio stations as voice-over talent, and his commercials and jingles have been heard by more than 30,000 people monthly.

Bohn said he became interested in comedy from a young age, borrowing comedy tapes from his local library and listening to comedians such as Rodney Dangerfield and Henny Youngman for hours on end. He first performed comedy of his own before a live audience as a seventh-grader.

“I told about 10 minutes of jokes and it was a huge hit,” he said. “I loved the feeling of people laughing at me. It just felt right, like I was supposed to do something where I was in front of people. Comedy is everywhere in life. I feel that I have a great way of finding the funny in everyday situations and making people laugh about it.”

But in spite of the fact that Bohn has been tenacious in his pursuit of his passion, he said there were still some obstacles and fears he has had to overcome in order to find a certain level of comfortability.

“Most people would say getting up in front of people (is their biggest fear),” he said. “Public speaking is the No. 1 phobia in America. Now take it a step further and try to be funny while talking to people you’ve never met. That’s pretty scary. Also, I think a lot of people worry about looking silly in front of friends or family. I’ve never had that problem. I know 90 percent of the time I look like an idiot. You just have to be confident enough to laugh it off.”
