Borrello Thanks Vietnam War Vets

State Sen. George Borrello, R-Sunset Bay, has a personal connection to The Vietnam War.

Today is National Vietnam War Veterans Day, and was signed into law by President Donald Trump.

Borrello’s father Tony, and Borrello’s deceased uncle Frank, served in the military, and fought in the Vietnam War.

“They fought this war like many others. A new type of war fought where the enemy didn’t often wear a uniform,” Borrello said during Wednesday’s New York State Senate session. “You didn’t know who the enemy was.”

Part of the session recognized resolution J225, memorializing Gov. Kathy Hochul proclaiming March 29 as Vietnam Veterans Day in New York State.

According to vietnamwar50th.com, today joins six other military-centric annual observances including Memorial, Independence Day and Veterans Day.

“It was chosen to be observed in perpetuity as March 29, 1973 was the day United States Military Assistance Command, Vietnam was disestablished and also the day the last U.S. combat troops departed Vietnam. In addition, on and around this same day Hanoi released the last of its acknowledged prisoners of war,” the website noted.

Borrello said the Vietnam War was a war that was fought by the working class, the poor, people of color, and people who did not have the means, money, or political connections to get out of serving their country.

“They served proudly and bravely,” Borrello said of the people who served.

But, Borrello added, those who served in that war came home to an ungrateful nation, who did not honor their service.

“It is forever a shame on us, and a dark point in our history here in the United States, that you did not get the welcome home that you deserved,” said to the Vietnam Veterans in attendance. “So on behalf of myself, and everyone else, welcome home. Thank you for a great job serving our country. You deserve much much better, and we have endeavored since then to make sure that no veteran is ever treated as you were treated.”
