Area Historian Writes Book About CCC’s County Presence

Front cover of “A Legacy of Labor”

A story of the only Civilian Conservation Corps Camp in Chautauqua County has recently been published by municipal historian, Pamela Brown.

Legacy of Labor: The Story of the Only Conservation Corps Camp in Chautauqua County, New York, is the culmination of years of research and presentations. The book tells the story about the men who served at the camp on Goshen Road near Panama. Brown said their work preserving the natural environment and their impact on the surrounding communities is a story that needs to be shared and appreciated.

Archival records, camp newspapers and descendant’s stories, along with photographs, provide a snapshot of what was happening all over the United States during that time period. Photographs from personal collections, the local DEC office and Harmony Historical Society enhanced the story.

The legacy of labor provided by the men in the camp is evidenced by the forests that cover once barren, untillable land.

Brown’s book is available on Amazon. Brown serves as municipal history for the Towns of Harmony and North Harmony and the Village of Panama. She is an active volunteer at Harmony Historical Society. She retired as the Records Management Coordinator for Jamestown Public Schools.

Starting at $2.99/week.
