Smoke Alarms Limit Foote Ave. Fire Damage

City firefighters made quick work of a fire in an apartment at 367.5 Foote Ave. recently.

Firefighters responded to the home at 12:59 a.m. Nov. 30 after being called by residents and found heavy smoke coming from the first and second floor windows on the front side of the house. Smoke alarms could be heard, and residents met firefighters in the rear apartment who said all residents had left the home.

Engine 3 responded to the scene took a handline into apartment one. An offshift complement of 15 firefighters and one chief was requested at 1:09 a.m. Fire was quickly contained to the kitchen and put out quickly, according to a news release. Ladder 1 then arrived on the scene and performed a primary search of three apartments in the house.

Once the fire was out firefighters began to check for any extension into the walls or ceiling, finding none. Three offshift firefighters remained at the scene with a fire investigator. Most crews left the scene by 2:15 a.m. with investigators on the scene until 4 a.m.

Residents safely removed two dogs from the apartment before firefighters arrived.

“Without smoke alarms this incident could have ended much worse,” firefighters said in a news release. “Please remember to check your smoke alarms.”
