Harmony Waiting On State Approval For Grants, Court Merger
HARMONY — The town of Harmony is playing the waiting game with the state over the town’s offices and merger of its court with North Harmony.
The Harmony Town Board recently made the decision that the town building was in need of renovations. They have looked at a draft of blueprints for those potential renovations, but are still waiting on possible approval of funds.
“The town has applied for a federal grant through Representative Nick Langworthy’s office for renovating offices and repairing our garage roof,” Town Supervisor John Brown said. “This of course is very preliminary since it may or may not be granted. The board is preparing plans for the renovation to collect budget costs for the project if it is approved.”
The process of working on merging the town courts of Harmony and North Harmony has been in process for many months and at the moment is still stalled. At the time of the May meeting it was thought to be a possibility that the process would have to restart if no decision was made by the state by the beginning of the summer session, but Brown said both houses have since approved it. The state Assembly approved A.5941 was originally passed in 2023 by the state Assembly, but it did not make it to the floor of the state Senate for approval. The bill was then unanimously approved on the final day of the legislative session in the state Assembly while the state Senate approved S.4249 on June 4 after amendments were made.
“The court merger between North Harmony and Harmony proposal has been in the state legislature process to establish a law, has been approved by both houses in June and is awaiting signature by Governor Hochul,” Brown said.
