Rally Against Lake Turbines Set For Saturday
IRVING — A rally against possible offshore turbines in Lake Erie is set for Saturday at Sunset Bay Beach Club.
Citizens Against Wind Turbines In Lake Erie (CAWTILE) is holding the event, which will be amphibious — a boat rally is scheduled from noon to 1 p.m., while a protest is planned for the beach from 2 to 5 p.m.
Boats are asked to assemble at noon near the beach and form a flotilla that will rotate in an oval pattern until 1 p.m. Anti-Lake Erie turbine signs will be handed out at the Cattaraugus Creek boat launch.
After the rally hits land, a series of speakers is planned. According to CAWTILE’s flyer promoting the event, “(State) Senator George Borrello, Assemblyman David DiPietro, Erie County Representative John Mills, (State) Senator Patrick Gallivan and Congressman Nick Langworthy’s representative will provide brief updates of their legislative efforts to pass a permanent law prohibiting the placement of wind turbines in Lake Erie.”
The band Swift Kick will play at the rally from 2:30 to 5 p.m.
There are no known concrete plans for wind farms in New York’s Lake Erie waters — but there is an offshore turbine project in the works near Cleveland.
The Lake Erie Development Corp. plans a demonstration wind farm containing six turbines. Construction is eyed for 2025 and the electricity it generates would go online two years later. It would be North America’s first offshore freshwater wind farm.
A petition opposing the project over its possible environmental effects has gained more than 9,000 signatures. The Ohio Supreme Court upheld a permit for the project in 2022.
