FREWSBURG — Majestic.

That’s a word that can describe the light display at Coan’s Dusty Acres Tree Farm at 1199 Frew Run Road.

The colors and how the lights are syncronized to music make display even more wonderful. Owner John Coan said the tree farm got its start in 2017 and Steve Coan, the light display programmer, said he started in 2009.

Steve Coan said after seeing a video, his mother really liked how the lights were set to music, so he went out and bought a light kit so he could program lights. He was not impressed with the way the program worked, so he said he scoured the internet trying to find the right program for his lights. He found the program called Vixen.

According to vixenlights.com, “Vixen is software for do-it-yourself lighting automation displays. Most popular at Christmas, computer-controlled displays are becoming increasingly popular for other holidays as well. With a PC and some hardware, anyone can have a professional-looking lighting display synchronized to music.

Vixen is geared primarily toward the DIYer. For those that prefer a packaged all-in-one solution, there are commercial solutions available such as Light-O-Rama. For those that prefer a lower-cost DIY solution, Vixen may be the software for you.”

Steve took a break shortly after he begun his display.

“We stopped for quite a few years — busy with life and the house. But when he (John) decided he was going to open the tree farm. He wanted to bring the light,” Steve Coan said.

Steve Coan said he programs every part of the light-emitting diode (LED) show.

“I think what a lot of people might not know is that every time a light comes on, I am the one that told them to do that. OK, so I sit there and I listen to the songs over and over and over again. And I think of what I want to do with the lights. OK. And there’s a lot of times where I listen to that song at a quarter speed. So I can hear beats, drums, bells, you know what? whatnot and have the lights come on it,” Steve Coan said.

Steve Coan added that the LEDs are a unique aspect of the show.

LED stands for light emitting diode, energystar.gov said. “LED lighting products produce light up to 90 percent more efficiently than incandescent light bulbs. How do they work? An electrical current passes through a microchip, which illuminates the tiny light sources we call LEDs and the result is visible light. To prevent performance issues, the heat LEDs produce is absorbed into a heat sink.”

LEDs are incorporated into bulbs and fixtures for general lighting applications, energystargov. noted. “Small in size, LEDs provide unique design opportunities. Some LED bulb solutions may physically resemble familiar light bulbs and better match the appearance of traditional light bulbs. Some LED light fixtures may have LEDs built in as a permanent light source. There are also hybrid approaches where a non-traditional “bulb” or replaceable light source format is used and specially designed for a unique fixture. LEDs offer a tremendous opportunity for innovation in lighting form factors and fit a wider breadth of applications than traditional lighting technologies.”

The show’s music includes songs from Trans Siberian Orchestra, Mariah Carey, and Michael Buble, and there is a electronic display which tells what song is playing.

John Coan said next year there will be some upgrades to the project.

Steve Coan said the 25-minute light show presentation begins at 5:30 p.m. and ends about 10 p.m. When the show begins, park your vehicle to face the house and tune to 105.5 FM and enjoy. There is ample parking available, so the Coans ask that you don’t park on the road and watch.
