A city resident recently expressed concern over the condition of playground equipment at a former elementary school.

Tom Benson spoke to members of the Jamestown Public Schools Board last week regarding the playground, located at the former RR Rogers Elementary School on Hebner Street. He said its location was a reason he and his wife bought their house nearby years ago when their children were young.

“That playground has been wonderful for us,” Benson told members of the school board. “We’ve loved it over time — kids have been on it all the time with friends.”

However, he said, the equipment that includes the usual slides and swings now shows its age and is in need of attention.

“Over the course of time, especially over the last 10 years or so, that playground has degenerated into a dangerous, dirty, just not sustainable place,” he said.

Benson suggested that the playground, which includes a lot of wood, either be removed or “significantly cleaned up.”

He noted the potential dangers. “It’s just getting worse and worse,” he said. “Somebody is going to get hurt over there. It’s just a bad situation.”

Rogers has been closed for about a decade; the property also housed the school district’s Success Academy.

Starting at $2.99/week.
