Carroll Historical Society Reopens Saturday
FREWSBURG — A new reception desk, floor tiles and exterior siding are just a few of the renovations that will be highlighted during the reopening ceremony of the Carroll Historical Society.
The historical society’s reopening ceremony will start at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, at 5 W. Main St., Frewsburg, which is located behind the town hall.
Harold Bennett, Carroll Historical Society president, said the renovations also included adding emergency exit lights, air circulation fans and 24-hour surveillance cameras.
“We’ve also upgraded a 17-year-old computer system. We’ve also upgraded our printer/scanner system,” he said. “The town put in a new electrical system, too.”
Bennett said the renovations have been ongoing for more than three yeas. He said the cost of the project has been around $10,000. He added they have received around $5,000 in grants from the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation and the rest of the funding for the renovations came from the historical society.
Bennett said the ceremony Saturday will also feature the historical society’s newest display.
“We are calling it our COVID-19 collection,” he said. “People have been cleaning out their basements and attics, and have been donating that stuff to us.”
Russell Payne, town supervisor, said there will also be guest speakers during the reopening ceremony, with the featured speaker being state Sen. George Borrello. Additionally, other speakers include Payne, Laura Smith, former town supervisor, John Davis, county legislator, and Tom Fenton, the first president of the Carroll Historical Society.
“The old highway garage has been turned into the historical society. The exterior of the building has been getting a facelift. It’s very appealing to the eye. A good job has been done by our highway crew,” Payne said.
Payne said the reopening ceremony will be held outside, weather permitting. He said light refreshments will be served.
“People can come in and tour the facility. There are nice renovations inside. It’s been an ongoing process,” he said. “Its been a labor of love for those involved in the historical society because (the renovations have) made it more appealing for people visiting.”
The reopening ceremony will also be aired live on the town of Carroll’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/Town-of-Carroll-107049797659415.
