Felski’s dominance leads Pembroke past Frewsburg

PITTSFORD — On two separate occasions Saturday afternoon, a train made its way down the tracks located a stone’s throw behind the scoreboard end of Ordiway Field at Pittsford Sutherland High School.

Each time, the engineer blasted his horn twice.

For those playing and watching the 8-man New York State Public High School Athletic Association Far West Regional, it was hard to ignore, much like it was hard to ignore the figurative “locomotive” that wore No. 3 for Section V’s Pembroke.

Running back Caleb Felski rushed for, unofficially, 445 yards on 36 carries and scored five touchdowns to lead the Dragons to a 50-19 victory over Frewsburg.

The win, Pembroke’s 34th in a row, advances it into the West semifinal at noon this Friday against either Section V wild card Holley or Frankfort-Schuyler at Vestal High School in suburban Binghamton.

You have one guess who the Mustangs will undoubtedly feature.

But the 5-foot-10, 190-pound Felski isn’t a one-trick “pony.”

In addition to his monstrous rushing total — he now has gained nearly 3,500 yards on the ground and scored 51 TDs on the season — Felski also threw a touchdown pass to Vijay Dhanda; ran for a pair of two-point conversions; and, defensively, intercepted two passes and recovered a fumble to thwart three golden Frewsburg scoring opportunities.

Caleb Kimmel accounted for the other Pembroke touchdown on a 57-yard run early in the fourth quarter.

Despite suffering several injuries, Frewsburg trailed only 16-12 early in the second quarter, but was unable to contain Felski, allowing the Mustangs to win going away.

For the Bears, Trent Lewis tossed a 60-yard TD strike to Chase Haglund in the first quarter; Lewis scored on a 2-yard run in the second period; and Henry Eckert caught a 16-yard scoring strike from Drake Beckstrom in the fourth quarter.
