One person was killed when a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction struck another head-on Thursday morning on Interstate 86.

Chautauqua County Sheriff James Quattrone confirmed the fatality, which occurred in the westbound lane of the interstate in the town of North Harmony. Sheriff’s deputies at 5:08 a.m. were notified of an eastbound vehicle in the westbound lane; moments later, the county 911 center received word of a head-on collision.

Firefighters from Ashville and Bemus Point, along with Chautauqua County EMS and a county coroner, responded to the interstate.

Quattrone confirmed a man traveling west in the westbound lane died in the crash. It wasn’t immediately known if the driver traveling in the wrong direction was injured.

An accident reconstruction team responded to the interstate, a portion of which was closed to traffic from Route 394 to Panama-Stedman Road.
