Westfield man facing drug charges after accident
A motor-vehicle accident Friday night led to charges for a Westfield man in the city of Dunkirk.
At approximately 8:53 p.m., Dunkirk Police conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle on the 300 block of Eagle Street. Upon identification of the operator of the vehicle, Mark C. Baker II, 36, was found to have an active and confirmed arrest warrant for a probation violation, wanted by the Erie County Sheriff’s Office.
Officers attempted to take Baker into custody for the arrest warrant, which he refused to cooperate and fled the scene in the vehicle at a high rate of speed south on Eagle Street. The vehicle disregarded several traffic control devices and failed to yield the right of way to an eastbound vehicle on West Sixth Street. Baker’s vehicle struck the vehicle travelling east on West Sixth Street at Eagle Street causing a serious collision and resulting in physical injury to the victim operator and causing damage to a fire hydrant, which resulted in significant water discharge. Baker then fled on foot and was taken into custody by arriving officer’s just east of the scene of the crash.
Through further investigation, a significant amount of narcotics, including more than one half ounce of Fentanyl and more than one ounce of cocaine, drug paraphernalia, scales, packaging, narcotic pills, naloxone strips and currency consistent with street level narcotics sales were discovered.
Baker was issued multiple vehicle and traffic law tickets and charged with the following state penal law offenses: second-degree obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest, second-degree reckless endangerment, third-degree unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a felony, third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, a felony and second-degree criminally using drug paraphernalia. Baker was jailed and later remanded to Chautauqua County Jail on $50,000 cash bail/$100,000 bond.
Dunkirk Police were assisted by Fredonia Police, Dunkirk Fire, Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Department, Southern Tier Regional Drug Task Force, Dunkirk City Public Works and Ellman’s Garage.
