Russell Artist Opens Exhibition At Frewsburg Library
FREWSBURG – A new art exhibition is on display this month at the Myers Memorial Library in Frewsburg.
Kimberly Turner’s exhibit is entitled “Un/Natural.”
“In this series, I photograph scientific specimens back in a natural setting,” Turner said. “The images are a visual representation of my attempt to metaphorically resurrect these creatures as a sign of admiration and gratitude for their contribution to scientific research and education. Held captive in a static state and in permanent suspension, they exist beyond time. Though still contained by glass jars or boxes, and obviously dead; the purpose is to illustrate the importance and singularity they once held in the world. They are creatures of wonder and curiosity that someone, at some point, wanted to preserve, contain, and learn from. There is a prominent contrast between the specimens and the wild environment where these creatures could naturally live. Our drive to define every bit of the world has led to a very strange relationship with the rest of its inhabitants. This visual juxtaposition highlights the disconnect that exists between mankind and the rest of the animal kingdom.”
Turner lives in Russell but began her artistic education at the State University at Fredonia, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in both photography and illustration. Turner continued her education at Indiana University Bloomington where she obtained a masters degree with a concentration in photography. Turner’s work often navigates the complexity of human relationships to the natural world. Driven by an urge to document, collect and preserve, Turner said she often questions humanity’s place within the animal kingdom in ways that celebrate its beauty and mystery while challenging the hierarchy of life forms in culture.
