MAYVILLE — Webb’s Captain’s Table Restaurant, Chautauqua Lake Central School and the Mayville Public Library continue to promote reading through Hooked on Books, the reading incentive program designed to instill a love of reading among elementary-aged students.
The program issues reading challenges at five different times throughout the school year. Students who meet their reading goals are able to participate in seasonal activities hosted by the Mayville Library and receive Webb’s Captain’s Table Restaurant and Carryout + Cafe coupons to enjoy with their families. Students in grades 4-6 also take part in a “Reading Warriors” competition or event. So far this year, students have been able to partake in pumpkin and snowflake decorating, a “minute-to-win-it” type competition, a STEM catapult challenge, and a sledding event.
“It has been wonderful to not only see students reading more, but also be able to engage in fun community-based activities with their teachers and family,” said Amy Webb, co-president of CRMA, the non-profit that funds the program and CLCS board president. “None of this would be possible without the ongoing commitment from CLCS, teachers, parents, Webb’s Captain’s Table Restaurant, CRMA, and the Mayville Library. We are truly blessed with a dedicated school and community that strives to enrich the lives of our students!”
The next incentive will showcase the talents of former teacher and storyteller, Merrilee Hindman. Hindman will host several story-hour sessions at the Mayville Library during two evenings in late April.
“The joy of watching Mrs. Hindman’s characters and stories come to life mimics the joy that can be found in reading.” said Megan Lundgren, CLCS principal. “It has been wonderful to see students excited about reading and engaging in fun activities to celebrate their accomplishments.”
