Stockton Library To Host Reopening Ceremony
STOCKTON – The Mary E. Seymour Memorial Free Library, Stockton Branch, will host a Stockton Showcase and library reopening celebration from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 28, to celebrate the reopening of the library after its winter closure. There will be champagne, hors d’oeuvres and treats. Originally chartered as the “Stockton Library” in 1899, the institution was renamed in 1901 to honor Mary Seymour, daughter of Henry W. Seymour. For more than a century, the second-floor library has served as a community gathering place, growing to 300 patrons by 1904 and was featured in Library Journal in 1965. The library’s back room, once complete with a stage and organ, hosted meetings for the YMCA, Chautauqua Literary and Science Circle, and the W.C.T.U. (which supported the Suffragist movement prominent in Chautauqua County). Reservations are requested by emailing director@stocktonlibraries.org.
