Cherry Creek Groups To

Host Fundraiser Saturday

CHERRY CREEK – Four groups will host a fundraiser Saturday at The Barn at Farrington Hollow to benefit the Cherry Creek Sno-Goers, Cherry Creek Fire Department, the Chautauqua County Equestrian Trail System and the Cherry Creek Community Association. The fundraiser will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. and includes hot dogs, hamburgers, beer and wine, giveaways, children’s activities and live music.

Outdoor Club To Hike Near Marienville,

Pa., Sunday

On Sunday, Allegheny Outdoor Club members will hike at the Buzzard Swamp Wildlife Viewing Area near Marienville, Pa. The length of the hike will be 3.8 miles. The route is flat with only 40 feet of elevation change. Hikers are advised to bring binoculars and cameras as the area is a good one to see wildlife, including waterfowl, bear, deer, beaver, coyote, snapping turtles, turkey, osprey and bald eagles. Those attending should meet at Musante Street, Warren, at 1 p.m. The group will stop at the UK convenience store at 102 Chestnut St., Marienville, at 1:45 p.m. before going into the national forest.

City Planning Commission To Meet Tuesday

The Jamestown Planning Commission will meet at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in the fourth floor police training room at City Hall. The public is welcome to attend. Public comments and questions can be forwarded to Ellen Shadle, city principal planner, at shadle@jamestownny.gov or 716-483-7657. The agenda includes approval of a parking lot at The Chautauqua Center and a presentation by Twan Leenders of the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy.

Conservancy Hosts Meeting On Sunnyside Marsh Birds

The Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy is sponsoring a special public program on Thursday, Aug. 22, at 7 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 1255 Prendergast Ave., Jamestown, with John Rappole, an emeritus research scientist at the Smithsonian Institution’s Conservation Biology Institute, and Jim Berry, retired president of the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History. Rappole and Berry will report on the bird life of the Sunnyside Marsh Preserve in Greenhurst. Sunnyside Marsh is a 4.5-acre nature preserve managed by the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy. For nine years federally and state licensed master bird banders Rappole and Berry have captured, banded and studied thousands of birds of 90 different species in this preserve. They recently published their findings in the paper “Seasonal Change in the Avian Community of a Western New York Shrub Swamp.”

Thursday’s program will present the findings, as well as provide background information on various plant and animal species found in the marsh. The program is free and open to the public. Registration is appreciated by emailing info@chautauquawatershed.org or calling 716-664-2166, ext.1002.
