The Princess Club will hold its annual banquet at 6 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church, 509 Prendergast Ave., Jamestown.
The Princess Club is a community-based effort to support girls in the community and train girls to have etiquette and self-respect as they develop into young ladies. The group also reinforces positive behavior, good manners and how to have positive self-esteem.
The guest speaker for Friday's meeting is Marsha McWilson. She started her singing career at the age of 7 as a member of the youth choir at St. John A.M.E. church in Niagara Falls. Under the guidance of Ann Barlow and Bruce Parke, she performed her first solo and has taken off from there. She continued under the musical guidance of Kathy Jordan Sharpton, her brother, director extraordinaire, Roger Walker Jr. of Bishop Paul S. Morton's Changing a Generation Church of Atlanta, Ga., and Marva Frails. Her first live recording was at age 15 with the Rev. Robert Lowe, Jeffrey White and Hezekiah Walker of Queens, where she sang with the St. John A.M.E. Church Youth and Young Adult Choir. Her solo lead was from the track entitled "Look Where He's Bought Me From."
As a motivational speaker, Marsha trained with Les Brown and has performed on his cruise, Sale to Greatness Conference. She is also a spokesperson and ambassador for the American Heart Association, who featured her on Channel 7 news for losing 160 pounds and being a motivation for good health in America. McWilson met and performed with gospel great Dr. Bobby Jones of BET. She appeared on a gospel artist retreat in Las Vegas, where she performed her hit song "I Need a Balance" on national television. Her music has made it possible for her to travel across the country touring with minister Jerome Ferrell, where she recorded songs such as, 'Abide With Me', 'There is Power in the Blood' as well as the latest song 'If You Don't Know Him by Now' in 2007.
Her recording career also led her to record with Ella Robinson, founder of the New Beginnings Choir, where she recorded 'Since Jesus Came into My Life'. McWilson has shared the stage with gospel artists such as Shirley Ceaser, Dottie Peoples, Donnie McClurkin and has opened in concert with Tamela Mann, Kurt Carr, Kim Burrell and Tye Tribbett. Her most recent live television performances were Operation Rainbow Push with Jesse Jackson, Rejoice in the Word Network and TCT Television. She has also sung backup for Yolanda Adams and has been featured as a new artist at the Gospel Music Workshop of America in Tampa, Fla.
She also, in 2009, performed at the World Wide Fashion Runway in Toronto, Canada, where she sang at the Fashion Week. She also performed for the 2009 NAACP Leadership Summit in Arizona. Most recently McWilson was allowed to perform a solo and duet act with Dr. Bobby Jones and R&B artist Tony Terry on the Tom Joyner Fantastic Voyage Cruise 2012. In 2012 she accompanied Shirley Ceaser in song at the Gospel Music Workshop of America. Also in that year she opened for Vanessa Bell Armstrong and Vicki Winans for a breast cancer awareness event.
McWilson also performed in Jamestown for a cancer benefit with Stephanie Burrell, the wife of MC Hammer, who hosted the event and sang alongside her. She also worked with the great songwriter Michael V. MaKay. Recently, McWilson was ordained as an evangelist in the Church of God in Christ and an elder at Zion Dominion Global Ministries under Pastor Roderick L. Hennings and his wife Pamela Hennings. She serves under the Music and Fine Arts Department.
She lives in Niagara Falls with her husband of 18 years, Howard McWilson, and their two sons Jaylan and Cameron. She is also the owner of McWilson's House of Beauty for over 29 years.
