To The Reader's Forum:
As a Jamestown Community College (JCC) alumni and father of three children who attended JCC, I would like to offer my heart-felt congratulations to the college for its recent decision to adopt a tobacco-free policy for all its campuses. JCC joins a growing list of more than 1,350 colleges and universities nationwide who have adopted such a policy.
The JCC policy prohibits the use of all tobacco products everywhere within the perimeter of all JCC property, both indoors and outdoors, and will apply to all JCC staff, students, visitors, and vendors. Cessation services are being provided for those interested.
A lot of thought and hard work went into this project, which was developed over a two-year period with input from faculty and students. This policy is designed to offer a supportive and respectful, tobacco-free environment that can help tobacco users quit; establish a social norm of non-tobacco use; reduce exposure to harmful secondhand smoke; create a cleaner environment for the campus; decrease maintenance costs and prepare students for tobacco-free work environments. In short, the JCC tobacco-free policy will help the college fulfill its mission to provide a tobacco-free environment that provides healthier living, learning and working campus for students, faculty, staff and visitors.
With this action, JCC has confirmed itself to be leader in public health promotion and wellness. The College deserves our compliments and thanks.
