Marvelyn C. Courtney, 81, of 126 Cass St. Westfield, N.Y., formerly of Sherman, N.Y., passed away Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014 at Absolut Care of Westfield.
She was born July 5, 1933, in North East, Pa., the daughter of the late Roy and Maude Eathel Hellyer Bloss.
Marvelyn loved reading, cross-stitching, country and gospel music and watching her children and grandchildren play athletics. Her faith was very important to her. She was an avid fan of the Texas Rangers but also followed the favorite sports teams of her children. Marvelyn enjoyed visiting relatives in Dunbar, Pa. and she absolutely loved deer. She spent a lot of time in her younger years spotting deer with her husband and children. Her family was the light of her life.
Surviving are her children: Kathy (Tom) Thompson, of Ripley, N.Y., Dale (Nina) Courtney, of Hartfield, N.Y., Dennis (Jackie) Courtney of Sherman, N.Y., Craig (Heather) Courtney of Jamestown, N.Y. and Brian (Lisa) Courtney of Stow, N.Y. She has 22 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren, whom she loved dearly. She has one surviving sister, Meredith Meadows, of Lakewood, N.Y. She was preceded in death by her husband, Coltes "Ed" Courtney, whom she married June 12, 1953, and who passed away March 13, 1993; three brothers, Malcolm, Harlan and Harold Bloss; a sister, Maxine Bloss; and a niece and nephew, Elaine Meadows Hall and Roy Meadows.
Visitation will be observed in the Spitzer Funeral Home in Sherman on Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2014, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.
The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 27 at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
