MAYVILLE - Chautauqua County Executive Vince Horrigan and members of the Chautauqua County Planning Board are currently looking for a Chautauqua County resident to serve on the Chautauqua County Planning Board.
In 1959, the Chautauqua County Board of Supervisors formed a subcommittee to study the possibility of forming a county planning board for Chautauqua County. The subcommittee in its report stated, "Planning is something that is carried out on a day-to-day basis by everyone, each of us as an individual in our personal and family life. County planning is only an extension of what we are all doing on an individual or personal basis."
As a result of the subcommittee's recommendations, the Chautauqua County Planning Board was established in February of 1960. The citizens who have served on the board over the years have helped the county address regional issues such as the establishment of sewers around Chautauqua Lake, legislative redistricting, establishment of a centralized solid waste system and other significant decisions and actions affecting the immediate and long-range protection, enhancement, growth and development of the county and its municipalities.
The board's duties currently consist of reviewing certain municipal and zoning actions and overseeing the annual review of the County Capital Budgeting Program. The board meets monthly on the first Tuesday of the month from 4-6 p.m. with the exception of meetings held weekly during the month of May.
The board consists of 11 members and has historically attempted to recruit members with diverse backgrounds from a wide geographic area. Presently the board has one vacancy and it is seeking a volunteer who is interested in serving the public interest, becoming knowledgeable about a wide range of issues, is fair, takes a broad perspective and can make rational decisions.
Citizens interested in being considered to serve on the board should submit their contact information and a brief biography by Sept. 12 to: County Executive Vince Horrigan, County Executive's Office, Gerace Office Building, 3 North Erie St., Mayville, NY 14757.
Citizens with additional questions regarding the duties and responsibilities of the board may contact Donald McCord at 661-8910 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
