Why do politicians end every speech with "God Bless America"? Are we hoping God will continue to bless our nation with wealth and power? If so, how should we use that wealth and power for God's glory if we truly want to be a Christian nation?
We are an extremely sinful nation trying to prove our Christianity by condemning abortion and gay marriage while we work hard to create laws that hinder the poor, marginalize the uneducated, prevent real wage reform, burden our children with college debt, and work to destroy meaningful healthcare reform in favor of spaghetti dinners to pay off catastrophic healthcare costs. We pride ourselves in the freedom of religion as long as it is Christian in nature. Heaven forbid that we truly believe in freedom of religion enough to have an atheist, Jew, or Muslim for president!
We want to save the unborn only to let them live in a nation that will do nothing to alleviate their potential poverty. We celebrated when the Supreme Court ruled in favor of corporate religious freedom, while screaming at immigrant children and families to go back to their home country where they will endure the poverty and potential death that awaits them there.
If we truly want to follow God's laws and become a Christian nation, we need to start loving our neighbors as ourselves. This means welcoming and loving all immigrants who are suffering from poverty, oppression, and fear of their lives. It means loving our children enough to forgive their student loans so they can prosper. It means lifting up the wages of poor working families like Hobby Lobby and Henry Ford did so families can prosper. It means creating loopholes for the poor not the rich!
Deuteronomy 15:1-10 "At the end of every seven years you must cancel debtsEvery creditor shall cancel any loan they have made to a fellow Israelitethere will be no poor among youif only you listen obediently to the Lord your God, to observe carefullythis commandmentthen because of this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to."
Micah 6:8 "what does the Lord require of you?but to do justice, and to love kindness,?and to walk humbly with your God?"
The test of our progress as a Christian nation is not whether we have created laws to prevent people from sinning but whether we love sinners enough that they choose to sin less and follow God. A true Christian nation would embrace laws to help reduce poverty not benefit the wealthy.
