Those who have interest in the nostalgia of Chautauqua Lake or the architectural history of Jamestown will want to be at Novel Destination Used Book Emporium on Tuesday, Aug. 5.
From 6-8 p.m., authors Beth Peyton and Peter Lombardi will talk about SUNY Press and their publishing experiences and give short presentations with readings from their new books, followed by a question-and-answer session.
Peyton is the author of "Clear Skies, Deep Water: A Chautauqua Memoir." The book describes how, after a year of devastating personal and financial loss, Peyton and her husband moved to Maple Springs on Chautauqua Lake to pick up the pieces of their lives.
As they worked to restore a neglected old house, the community, the beauty of the lake and the old-fashioned sensibility of the place comforted them. While her story traces their progress toward recovery, it also includes tales of the silly, colorful, and warm characters who became their neighbors and friends.
Lombardi, adjunct assistant professor of urban planning at SUNY Buffalo and deputy director of the Jamestown Renaissance Corporation, has written "Jamestown, New York: A Guide to the City and Its Urban Landscape." It chronicles the development of the city's built environment over 200 years, from a frontier outpost, to a leading maker of furniture and textiles, to a reenergized postindustrial city.
Part one provides a short history of Jamestown, emphasizing the economic and social forces that have influenced the city's architecture and development patterns. Part two includes detailed entries on more than 100 buildings and sites, with maps to facilitate walking and driving tours.
