Martha A. Brown, 101, of Lakewood, formerly of Clymer, died Sunday, July 6, 2014 at WCA Hospital in Jamestown, NY. She was born June 13, 1913, in Chautauqua, N.Y., the daughter of Guy Fulton and Velma Green Akin.
She was a 1931 graduate of Chautauqua High School and a 1936 graduate of the Geneseo Normal School with a teaching certificate in K-8 education.
She began her teaching career as a substitute teach-er in Chautauqua and Clymer in 1937, and taught second grade in Lakewood from 1938 to 1940.
A lifelong resident of Chautauqua County, Mrs. Brown was an accomplished pianist, and a devoted homemaker and mother. She returned to substitute teaching at Clymer Central School in 1961, and to full-time teaching of fourth grade from 1968 until her retirement in 1972.
Mrs. Brown was a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Mayville and served as a fundraiser for the American Red Cross for several years in Clymer.
She spent her retirement years enjoying summers on Chautauqua Lake and the winter months in Florida.
Her interests included traveling, reading, playing bridge, completing cross-word puzzles, fishing and birdwatching. She was always happiest on the many occasions when her family gathered to celebrate holidays and special events.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Hubert Winslow Brown of Lakewood, whom she married August 14, 1940. She is survived by two sons: Dr. Jerome W. Brown of Pawley's Island, S.C. and Daniel F. Brown of Fort Myers, Fla.; one daughter, Jane E. Brown of Basking Ridge, N.J.; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers: Howard Langdon Akin, Guy Benjamin Akin and Marcus Jerome Akin; and two sisters: Effie Louise Akin Werme and Marjorie Eleanor Akin Johnson.
Friends will be received from 1-2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9 at the Freay Funeral Home in Mayville, N.Y. A memorial service will be held immediately following visitation with the Rev. Mark Parsons of Mayville officiating. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery.
The family requests that contributions be made to the Lakewood Volunteer Fire Dept. in lieu of flowers.
