Robert Lewis Beckman, 87, passed away peacefully on Friday, Dec. 20, surrounded by family at his home in Brighton, N.Y. He was born May 15, 1926, in Westfield, N.Y., to Earl and Aileen Beckman.
Robert grew up in Westfield. During World War II, his family moved to Washington, D.C., where he graduated from high school, after which he immediately joined the U.S. Navy to be trained as a naval pilot. He attended Carnegie Tech in Pittsburgh, Pa., where he received a Bachelor of Science in industrial engineering in 1951 and Harvard Business school, where he received a Master's in Business Administration in 1954.
Robert's career took him and his family across the world living in Indonesia, India, Turkey and Saudi Arabia. In 1986, Robert and his family moved back to western New York where he worked as the finance director of Chautauqua County for 15 years before retiring.
Robert married Ertem Merey in 1954 in Stillwater, N.Y. They were happily married for 59 years.
Robert was preceded in death by his father, Earl and mother Aileen; brother, Richard; and daughter, Renan.
Robert is survived by his spouse, Ertem of Rochester, N.Y.; his two sons: Peter of Wakefield, R.I., and Orhan of Brighton, N.Y.; and his grandchildren: Emily, Peter, Merai, Tayler and Renan.
A memorial service will be held at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 12 Elm St., Westfield, N.Y., at 1 p.m., Friday, June 27. A potluck dinner will held that evening at the Point Chautauqua residence.
