Michael J. Smith, 46, of Heritage Village Rehab and Skilled Nursing, formerly of 13 Tower St., Jamestown, died, Saturday (May 31, 2014) at Heritage Village, after a courageous battle with brain cancer.
He was born February 24, 1968 in Jamestown, the son of James Smith and Onnolee Gavert Samuelson.
Mike was a 1986 graduate of Jamestown High School and also a graduate of West Virginia University with a Bachelor's degree in accounting.
He was employed by Arthur R. Gren Co. in Falconer, and the Town of Carroll, before having to resign due to ill health
His sons were the light of his life, and he loved spending time with them, as well as coaching Little Hoopers basketball and Frewsburg Little League, and he also enjoyed golfing.
Mike was a member of the Independent Order of Vikings # 65, a member of the West Virginia University Alumni Association and former member and longtime employee of Samuel Derby Post 556, Sons of the Legion, Frewsburg, NY.
Besides his parents, James (Shirley) Smith and Onnolee Samuelson (James Murphy) all of Jamestown, Mike is survived by two sons: Derek L. Smith and Carter J. Smith of Frewsburg; a brother: Mark (Cindy) Smith and niece, Madison Smith of Jamestown, a sister: Melinda (Steve) Worden of Gerry,
and his dog Roxy. He is also survived by many other loving relatives, such as step-siblings, aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Eldred and Gladys Smith, his maternal grandparents, Walter and Audrey Gavert,
and his uncle, Jack Smith.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Peterson Funeral Home, Frewsburg.
The Rev. Mel McGinnis, pastor of Kiantone Congregational Church and the Rev. Lee O'Brien pastor of Busti Federated Church will officiate. Burial will be in Fentonville Cemetery, Frewsburg.
The family will receive friends from 3-7 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.
