Jamestown Audubon wants people to get outside and connect with nature. The Chautauqua County Health Network wants people to get outside and exercise.
These missions are being combined to create the walking field trip.
Instead of boarding a bus and driving to a distant location, those interested can organize a group and walk to a closer destination. What people do along the way can be tied to their own mission or curriculum. Training will be held from 6-9 p.m. Monday, May 19, at the Dr. Lillian Vitanza Ney Renaissance Center, 119-121 W. Third St., Jamestown, led by staff from the Jamestown Audubon Center and Sanctuary.
Jamestown Audubon Center and Sanctuary staff members will host training Monday, May 19, to teach participants how they can lead a group on a walking field trip. The training will be held at the Jamestown Renaissance Corporation in Jamestown and is free due to a grant from the Chautauqua County Health Network.

The program will begin indoors with an overview of what a walking field trip is and how to start a walking field trip program. Then participants will take a sample walking field trip along the Riverwalk in downtown Jamestown. The focus will be on nature along the way, with a prop bag developed for that purpose. On the return, there will be discussion about how people might modify the trip to meet their mission or curriculum.
After filling out evaluations, participants will receive an assignment to take a group of people to the Riverwalk on a walking field trip sometime before the end of September and report back on how it went. They will be able to borrow a prop bag for the walk.
A light dinner of sandwich, chips and beverage will be provided during the training.
