There aren't too many people who will celebrate their retirement and their 80th birthday on the same day.
Today at 5 p.m. at La Scala Restaurant, located at 3155 Fluvanna Ave., Jamestown, people will gather to celebrate the District Elder Uvie Stewart Sr.'s 80th birthday and his retirement after 40 years of service. Carmen Taylor, assistant pastor, said Stewart started the Emmanuel Temple Church in Jamestown when it was first located at 801 Washington St. The church is now located at 1050 N. Main St.
"There is going to be a banquet and several dignitaries from the organization there for his retirement combine birthday party," she said.

Taylor said Stewart has served as a district elder and district superintendent for the church.
"He has traveled extensively overseas," she said. "He went to the Caribbean for both vacation and to procurate the gospel."
Taylor said she has worked as Stewart's assistant for more than 40 years.
"He is a mentor and a great leader," she said.
In a proclamation, Jamestown Mayor Sam Teresi said Stewart is much deserving of his retirement and is a successful example and role model for all.
"On behalf of our entire community, we recognize Pastor Stewart, who we have been proud and honored to have as part of the Jamestown community for over four decades," Teresi stated. "We recognize and appreciate the numerous civic and volunteer organizations and causes that Pastor Stewart selflessly contributed to during his time in Jamestown."
