Joan P. Shevory, 88, of 5 Towner Ave., passed away at 1:25 a.m. Monday (April 28, 2014), in WCA Hospital.
She was born April 25, 1926, in Jamestown, the daughter of Harold C. and Doris Carlson Peterson.
Joan grew up on the north side of Jamestown, graduated from Jamestown High School in 1944, and from the Alfred University Extension in 1946. She began her professional career working in the Boston Athenaeum Library as she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree at Northwestern University. She was working as a librarian for Ginn & Company when she met and married Thomas F. Shevory, a Dedham, Mass. school teacher.
The Shevorys returned to Jamestown in 1957. Joan worked in various area libraries and earned a master's degree in library science from Syracuse University in 1962. After her husband's death in 1967, she became reference librarian at Jamestown Community College.
A life-long progressive Democrat, Mrs. Shevory became active in politics in the late 1960s, and in 1970 was appointed by Mayor Stanley N. Lundine to the Jamestown City Council.
She retired from the council at the end of 1973, but sought and won another seat in 1979 and was re-elected in 1981. She was a member of the Zoning Board of Appeals from 1974-79, was active with the Parent Teacher Association, and was a trustee of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Chautauqua Institution.
She was the longest serving active member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Jamestown, and was also a member of the Center for Inquiry and the Fenton Historical Society.
Surviving are three sons: Philip A. (companion, Carla Olinger) Shevory of Jamestown, Mark S. (Barbara) Shevory of Lake Toxaway, N.C., and Thomas C. Shevory of Ithaca, N.Y.; three grandchildren: Lynn Shevory of Boston, Mass., Robyn Shevory of Asheville, N.C., and Peter Shevory of Fort Collins, Colo.; three brothers: Don (Anna) Peterson of Alexandria, Va., Pete Peterson of Fort Frances, Ontario, and Jon (Joan) Peterson of Albuquerque, N.M.; and her longtime companion with whom she made her home, Myron Koplik of Jamestown.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas F. Shevory, who passed away in 1967.
A memorial celebration will be at 2 p.m., Saturday at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 1255 Prendergast Ave., Jamestown, N.Y. 14701. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials may be made to the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.
