Jamestown Community College students Amy Hulin of Bolivar, Jennifer James of Cuba and Alexandra Villafrank of Westfield were among 59 students from the State University and City University of New York placed on the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society 2014 All-New York Academic Team for Community Colleges.
The students, all of whom will graduate in May, were honored at a recent luncheon in Albany for their academic achievements, leadership, and service to their colleges and communities.
The All-New York Academic Team for Community Colleges recognizes achievements of students enrolled in community, technical and junior colleges who a 3.5 grade point average or better and have a history of outstanding community service. Twenty students were chosen for the first academic team, 20 for the second academic team, and 28 for the third team.
The PTK academic team awards are sponsored by the New York Community College Trustees, the Association of Presidents of Public Community Colleges, and the Faculty Council of Community Colleges.
James and Villafrank, who both have a 4.0 grade point average, were named to the first academic team.
A student at JCC's Cattaraugus County Campus, James will graduate with an Associate in Science: liberal arts and sciences: social science degree. She plans to pursue studies in childhood education at St. Bonaventure University. James has been a member of Phi Theta Kappa, Teacher Education Club, and the JCC women's soccer team.
Villafrank, who will graduate with an Associate in Applied Science: occupational therapy assistant degree, plans to enter the occupational therapy field. She currently works at a long-term care and rehabilitation facility.
Villafrank has been a member of Phi Theta Kappa and American Business Clubs.
The second academic team includes Hulin, who will graduate with an A.S.-Liberal Arts and Sciences: math/science degree. She plans to transfer to Daemen College to major in physical therapy. Hulin is a student ambassador and a member of Phi Theta Kappa.
Hulin served as captain of the JCC Cattaraugus County Campus women's soccer team and was ranked as one of the top 15 goalies in Region 3 of the National Junior College Athletic Association.
