The Jamestown Area Hockey Associates (JAHA), LLC have been conducting a Name Your Team Contest since announcing in March that junior hockey will be returning to the Jamestown Savings Bank Arena.
After thousands of submissions and days of deliberation, the JAHA has chosen Bud Tomassi's name of Southern Tier Xpress for the Jamestown team in the North American 3 Hockey League (NA3HL)
"It blew my mind when my submission was picked," said Tomassi, a Jamestown resident who serves as the coaching coordinator for the Chautauqua County Youth Hockey Association. "My thought was in order to help grow the sport and the new team within this part of Western New York and Northwest Pennsylvania. The name should be identified more with the geographical area rather than just Jamestown proper. The Xpress links us back to the days of the railroad, the Gateway Train Station on Second Street and the economic importance both once had to our area. Second, it associates itself with the I-86 corridor (Southern Tier Expressway) and the economic importance it serves today to the Allegheny Plateau region."
Jamestown Area Hockey Associates vice president Randy Stuart, left, and Southern Tier Xpress assistant general manager Tom McFall, right, congratulate Bud Tomassi, who won the Name Your Team contest for Jamestown’s North American 3 Hockey League team.
"Bud really put some serious thought into his idea," said JSBA general manager and member of the JAHA, Brian Cersosimo. "Bud accounted for our region's unique history, geography and the longevity of junior hockey at the Jamestown Savings Bank Arena. We are excited about the name and its ties to the region"
Tomassi will receive a pair of season tickets for the first two seasons of the Southern Tier Xpress for his idea.
"Not only will he receive season tickets and all of the perks and benefits that come along with that for the next two seasons," said Cersosimo "but, Bud is going to be synonymous with the name Southern Tier Xpress forever."
The NA3HL is a top level Tier 3 league in the North American Hockey League association. The Xpress will also encompass a pair of youth feeder teams including an under-14 and an under-16 team.
Tryouts for the feeder teams will be held on April 21, 23 and 24 from 6-9 p.m. at the JSBA.
Tryouts for the Xpress NA3HL team are set for May 16-18 and will also be held at JSBA
