BUTLER, Pa. - Excellent pitching carried Jamestown Community College to a pair of wins over Butler CC Wednesday afternoon in NJCAA non-conference baseball action.
Nate Starkes and N'Kyle Taylor combined for a 2-1 opening-game victory and Ed Dorunda fanned 14 in going the distance in an 8-1 win in the nightcap for the Jayhawks.
Besides the pitching, the defense was superb by not making an error in either game.
The doubleheader sweep improves the Jayhawks' record to 4-7 after winning three of their last four games. Butler CC drops to 0-3.
Starkes went the first 5 innings in the opener, allowing five hits with seven strikeouts and two walks for JCC. Taylor came on and got the save with 1 innings of work in which he yielded just a hit and a walk.
The Jayhawks had four hits with Christian Van Note having two. Jeff Andrulis added a RBI double and Bram Johnson had another hit.
JCC scored a run in the first and third innings while Butler tallied once in the fifth.
Dorunda was sensational in the second game for JCC as he mowed down Butler with his strikeout ball and scattered seven hits. He fanned the side in two separate innings while walking one and allowing an earned run.
JCC made the most of six hits as Cody Matheson and Brandon Habibulah recorded two hits, Van Note a RBI single and Josh Allen a double with two runs scored. Habibulah and Van Note each scored two runs while Matheson joined Van Note with RBI singles.
The Jayhawks were helped by seven Butler errors.
JCC scored once in the first and fourth innings followed by four in the sixth and two in the seventh. The only run off Dorunda came in the fifth.
The Jayhawks are off until a Saturday twin bill at Finger Lakes CC in the Region 3, Division 2 opener and then the same teams are scheduled to meet again at 1 p.m. Sunday at Diethrick Park.
