The annual St. Susan Center a basket fair is back, but it has found new home in Jamestown.
The 11th annual Spring Ahead basket fair fundraiser for St. Susan Center will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Jamestown Community College physical education building. Ticket sales for the baskets will be held between 11 a.m and 1:30 p.m., and all tickets must be placed by 1:45 p.m. so that the drawing can begin at 2 p.m.
In addition to a Chinese auction of more than 110 baskets including grand-prize items such as an Apple iPad, Nikon camera kit, Kindle Fire HD, Garmin GPS, $100 Amazon gift card and a Keurig coffee maker, the event will also feature food, activities for children, door prizes and a 50/50 drawing.

According to Sue Colwell, executive director for the St. Susan Center, the former location, Chautauqua Suites in Mayville, served the St. Susan Center well, but it was time to move the celebration to a downtown location.
"Because St. Susan Center is located in Jamestown, the tickets need to be drawn in Jamestown," Colwell said. "The staff at Jamestown Community College has been very accommodating. The space is much larger, which will give us room to offer more. We've expanded our kids table, which means Fluvanna Community Church's Kids Power Company will be doing crafts with kids all day."
While the children are kept safe and entertained, area residents will have the chance to participate in the basket auction. Back by popular demand, the auction's announcer will once again be the Rev. Dayle Keefer, of the Fluvanna Community Church. All of the items in the auction were donated by area residents, businesses, organizations and were packaged by local volunteers. Jamestown Savings Bank is a major sponsor of the event, and donated the funds for the grand prizes.
"The event will help us raise funds to keep St. Susan Center operating," Colwell said. "Because we don't get much local or state funding, we depend on the community's support of our fundraisers. Last year we raised about $12,000, but I'd like to see that get up to about $15,000 because our goal is to be as self-sustaining as possible. We're serving more meals than ever before, and the need is greater than ever. In the past it cost an average of $2.50 per meal, but now it's more than $3 per meal. We've had to hire more staff members because we're all stretched thin - there's just a greater demand."
Tickets for the basket auction are $10 for 12 tickets, which includes two door prize tickets, or $5 for six tickets. Grand-prize tickets are $10 each or three tickets for $25. The basket fair will be located at Jamestown Community College's Physical Education Complex, which can be accessed via Curtis Street in Jamestown. Those who cannot attend the event can access a basket catalog and absentee purchase forms at www.stsusancenter.org.
