This bald eagle sitting in a tree along Front Street was large enough to stop traffic Thursday morning. Joe Costanzo of Jamestown was driving along Front Street around 11 a.m. when he noticed the national bird sitting high atop a tree on a limb. The eagle hung out for about 15 minutes before taking off from its perch. The bald eagle appears on the United States national seal. In the late 20th century, it was on the brink of extinction in the continental United States. Populations recovered and the species was removed from the U.S. federal government's list of endangered species on July 12, 1995, and transferred to the list of threatened species. It was removed from the list of endangered and threatened wildlife in the lower 48 states on June 28, 2007.
