Charles William "Chuck" Carris died March 21, 2014, at St. Vincent's Hospital in Erie, Pa., following a brief illness due to complications from heart surgery.
He was born in Ripley, N.Y. on Aug. 4, 1930, to the late Edgar and Irene (Perdue) Carris. He received his early education in a one-room schoolhouse in Stateline, N.Y., and graduated from Ripley Central School in 1948 in the top 10 of his class.
On Feb. 2, 1951, he married Winifred "Ted" Pitt in Tampa, Fla. Chuck and Ted returned to Ripley, where they raised their children. They still operated a fruit farm on Carris Road in Ripley, for more than 60 years and grew peaches, apples, blueberries and grapes. While Ted was overseeing the operation of the farm, Chuck would be off delivering and visiting with his customers in Western New York, Western Pennsylvania, and Eastern Ohio.
Chuck was an active member of the Ripley United Methodist for more than 60 years. He was Sunday School teacher and a lay leader. He will be remembered as loving the Lord and was a devout Christian willing to share his faith with many, many folks. During his lifetime, Chuck was a 50-year plus member of the Ripley and Pomona Grange, the State and National Granges, the Ripley Rod and Gun Club, the Farm Bureau and The Gideons International.
Chuck greatly enjoyed hosting various picnics and family reunions on the farm. Early in the morning, you would find Chuck at Meeders having coffee and talking with his friends. He was an avid reader, enjoyed deer hunting, followed local high school sports and traveling.
Besides his wife, Chuck is survived by his son, C. Jeffrey Carris; and daughters: Wanda (James) Carmany and Lynn (Carter) Stetson. He is further survived by his four grandchildren: Paul and Joe Carmany of Lynchburg, Va., Lindsay Stetson of Roxboro, N.C., and Garrett Stetson of Liverpool, N.Y.
Chuck was predeceased by two brothers: Gerald and Ellsworth Carris; and four sisters: Nellie Janes, Emma Smith, Betty Beckerink and Marvel Lawson.
Chuck's funeral service will be on Thursday, March 27, 2014, at 11 a.m. at the Ripley United Methodist Church with Pastor Craig Buelow officiating.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the ser-vice and may call at the Mathews Funeral Home, 104 W. Main St., Ripley, N.Y., on Wednesday, March 26, 2014. from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Interment will be at the South Ripley Cemetery at the family's convenience.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ripley United Methodist Church or Gideons International, P.O. Box 140800, Nashville, TN 37214-0800, in Charles' memory would be appreciated by the family.
