Ruffin VanHook Sr., 64, of 65 W. 12th St.,, died at 6:38 a.m. Friday (March 7, 2014), in Heritage Green Rehab and Skilled Nursing.
He was born Aug. 13, 1949, in Gretna, Va., the son of James and Elizabeth Reynolds VanHook.
He attended Jamestown High School, and was a member of the North Main St. Church of God. In earlier years, he had been employed as a production worker at Chautauqua Hardware Corp.
A witty person who enjoyed sarcasm, he kept himself well-informed on a wide variety of subjects. He enjoyed fishing and auto detailing, but most of all loved being a granddad.
Surviving are two daughters: Jocelyn VanHook of Buffalo. and Shar-dae VanHook of Charlotte, N.C.; a son, Tyrone VanHook of Jamestown; 10 grandchildren: Craig VanHook, Adrian VanHook, Aaron VanHook, Eriesha Richardson, Ericca Richardson, Mya VanHook, TyJa VanHook, Jahzer Alford, Ollie Alford, and Plies Alford; and two sisters: Diane Elias of Cleveland, Ohio, and Carolyn Barksdale of Lynchburg, Va.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn E. Ferguson VanHook, whom he married March 23, 1974, and who died Oct. 24, 2006; and by a son, Ruffin VanHook Jr., who died April 7, 2007.
The funeral will be held at noon on Friday in the Powers, Present & Sixbey Funeral Home. Minister Chloe Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery.
