The Jamestown Savings Bank Arena will host a skating and gymnastics special event again in December.
Disson Skating has reached a multi-year agreement with ABC to televise their entertainment programs for the 2014-15 season. In the announcement of the agreement, it lists four events with one of them being the Skating and Gymnastics Spectacular at the Jamestown Savings Bank Arena to be taped Dec. 13 for a later broadcast.
The television production of these specials is handled by IMG Productions. The final air dates as well as performance lineup and celebrity musical guests will be announced at a later date.
Brian Cersosimo, Jamestown Savings Bank Arena general manager, said there won't be a formal announcement on the event from arena officials until all the performers and talent for the show have been finalized. He said his goal is to make the event a staple for the community.
''I think it is great for local people to see world-class athletes, gold-medal Olympians, fantastic gymnasts and top artists performing,'' he said. ''It is a top-notch show for young kids and the community to see.''
Cersosimo, who was the arena's hockey director when the arena hosted the Progressive Skating & Gymnastic Spectacular in December, said he was there for the performance.
''I got to see the show, and what goes on behind the scenes,'' he said. ''It has been done here for two years, and we're comfortable with it.''
Cersosimo said he wants to expand on the event to feature more than just the skating and gymnastics spectacular.
''We're looking to not just do the show, but make it a three-day event leading up to the show for the community,'' he said. ''There are a lot of appearances the artists can do. A lot of meet-and-greet. We're working diligently to put together an event with the Jamestown Skate Club, the gymnastics club from the Y and a band to do our own show probably on Thursday. We can use it as a fundraiser for those groups, and showcase the talent we have here locally.''
ABC will air the first set of two-hour skating shows in the fall of 2014. The second pair of skating specials will air in early 2015. Each show will feature the signature lifts, spins and jumps choreographed to chart-topping hits performed live by some of the biggest stars in the music industry. Meryl Davis and Charlie White, who made Olympic history at the Sochi Games as the first-ever U.S. gold medal winners in ice dancing, have been confirmed to perform for the series, alongside fellow gold medal champion Brian Boitano. Gold medal skater Kristi Yamaguchi returns to ABC and will host alongside three-time national champion and two-time U.S. Olympian Michael Weiss.
''Over the past 25 years, we've been proud to create hundreds of skating specials showcasing one of the most beloved sports in the world combined with live musical entertainment,'' said Stephen Disson, president of Disson Skating. ''This new long-term partnership with ABC is a natural fit, and we look forward to adding to their slate of great, family-friendly programming.''
In December, nearly 2,000 area residents braved the elements in order to witness the skating and gymnastics spectacular event in its second consecutive performance at the arena. The event was hosted by several big names, including: Yamaguchi; Weiss; and Olympic gymnastics champions Nadia Comaneci and Bart Conner. Vocal performances were given by Candice Glover, winner of the 2013 American Idol competition, as well as Coco Jones and Lucas Grabeel, star of Disney's ''High School Musical,'' and ABC Family's ''Switched at Birth.''
Skaters included: Elvis Stojko, Joannie Rochette, Kurt Browning, Max Aaron, Ryan Bradley and the duo of Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir. Gymnasts featured the talents of Nastia Liukin, Catalina Ponor, Jordyn Wieber, Beth Tweddle, John Orozco, Steve Legendre, Brandon Wynn, Paul Ruggerri and a duo performance by Tweddle and Daniel Whiston. The show was recorded live and aired nationally on NBC on Jan. 5.
