The Jamestown Savings Bank Arena has partnered with the American Special Hockey Association (ASHA) to host the third annual Special Hockey Extravaganza this weekend.
The extravaganza will begin on Friday at 2 p.m. and will conclude on Sunday at noon. It will consist of 16 teams including the Chautauqua Lakers as well as teams from Buffalo, Canada, Detroit, Baltimore, Washington DC, Long Island, Pittsburgh and Ohio.
The weekend was created by the ASHA in 2000 to give individuals with special needs a chance to be a part of a team. The players learn to play competitive hockey, but at the same time, special hockey serves a therapeutic purpose, with far more emphasis on social skills, responsibility, and attitude.
''It is great to be back for a third year," said ASHA president Mike Hickey. "Jamestown is one of the few places that we return to each year. Our players have had a fantastic experience in Jamestown, and we look forward to this weekend's action."
Each player will receive a gift bag as they register and a party for the teams will be held throughout the arena on Saturday evening thanks to McDonald's, Rudy'z Pizza, Pepsi and the Jamestown Rubber Stamp Company.
"We are excited to keep the extravaganza coming back each year," said JSBA assistant general manager Craig Hinderleider. "We strive to provide a great experience for the players and coaches, and our doors are open to the public to come check out the action."
There will be no charge for spectators and concessions along with Sully's Irish Pub will be open throughout the weekend.
