Foundry Alley, which is between Second and Third streets in downtown Jamestown, will soon be abandoned by the city.
On Tuesday, the Jamestown Planning Commission approved the request to abandon Foundry Alley, which runs parallel to Washington and Cherry streets. Different community groups in the area have requested the alley be abandoned so they can use it for parking. During the Planning Commission meeting, Jeff Lehman, city Public Works Department director, said the alley is known as the Gebbie Foundation parking lot. He said the site plan work and review of the proposal were done a few years ago.
"This is a housekeeping issue," Lehman said about the proposal to abandon the alley.
A request has been made for the city to abandon Foundry Alley, which is located between Second and Third streets near Washington Street. The request has been made so the street can be used for parking for community organizations located near the alley.

In 2009, the Jamestown Renaissance Corporation renovated Foundry and Factory alleys. Foundry Alley is also the location for the Downtown Jamestown Farmers Market.
During a Jamestown City Council work session on Feb. 3, city officials said they will still be responsible for utilities under the street.
In other business, the Planning Commission appointed a new representative to the Jamestown Strategic Planning and Partnerships Commission. The group of volunteers meet throughout the year to study and discuss various methods of improving life in the community. The group forms smaller "action teams" to progress the goals set by the commission.
The Planning Commission's representative was Douglas V. Champ, who no longer is a member of the group. James Olson, city clerk and financial services director, said he could be the Planning Commission's representative because he already attends the meetings. The Planning Commission then appointed him to the Jamestown Strategic Planning and Partnerships Commission.
It was also announced during the meeting, a public hearing before the Ellicott Zoning Board of Appeals will be held at 7 p.m. today to discuss the Boxwood Hotel project proposed for Route 60 and Interstate 86. The hotel developer has requested variances for area, additional signage and height limitations. The Planning Commission could not discuss specifics on the project because they had not been given any plans on the proposed hotel.
Boxwood Hotel, a regional development company, has expressed interest in building a Holiday Inn Express at the intersection, with 71 rooms and will employ about 24 people.
