On Saturday, March 8, the Jamestown Branch of the American Association of University Women will mark the 15th annual AAUW Get in the Game - 15 years of reaching out to more than 2,200 young girls in the local community. In celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day, the AAUW Jamestown Branch and Jamestown Community College will sponsor the 15th annual Get in the Game, a daylong event for girls in grades 4-7.
Beginning at 8:30 a.m. and continuing through 4 p.m., girls will rotate in age-appropriate groups through eight different sports at the JCC Physical Education Complex. This year the sports featured are kayaking, rugby, soccer, Zumba fitness, tae kwon do, self-defense, track and basketball.
The sports workshops accommodate all skill levels. Girls will be supervised by AAUW, college and high school volunteers, and first aid assistants are available throughout the event. Registration is limited to 150 girls and costs $12 per girl. Registration includes a full day of activities, lunch and a souvenir T-shirt. To register, participants can request a form at email@example.com or go to Facebook page "Get in the Game-Jamestown, NY." A limited number of scholarships are available.

The annual Get in the Game event was inspired by the Women's Sports Foundation that created and annually sponsors the National Girls and Women in Sports Day. The event gives girls the opportunity to experience new sports, to learn about teamwork and to increase their own self-esteem and self-confidence. The Chautauqua Region Community Foundation and the YWCA are also sponsors of Get in the Game. Evergreen Outfitters of Ashville will supply the kayaks and teach participants the basics of kayaking.
The Chautauqua County Roller Derby League skating team, Babes of Wrath, will once again provide a demonstration of their roller derby expertise. Babes of Wrath are Chautauqua County's own women's roller derby team competing locally and regionally in the Women's Flat Track Derby Association.
AAUW is a nationwide organization that advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, research and philanthropy. If interested in learning more about AAUW and the Jamestown Branch, go to www.aauw.org or jamestown-ny.aauw.net.
