Fourteen seventh- and eighth-grade students from Westfield Academy & Central School attended the 20th annual Chautauqua Concert Band Day on Jan. 11.
More than 200 seventh- and eighth-grade band students from 16 schools around Chautauqua County were chosen by their teachers for this special event. The students had master classes with professional musicians who played their particular instrument, and were treated to a jazz concert given by their teachers. They also spent time rehearsing with guest conductors for the evening performance.
The first half of the evening's concert was a performance by the Chautauqua Concert Band adult group, consisting of music teachers and professional musicians from around the area. The second half of the concert was dedicated to the performances by first the seventh-graders and then by the eighth-graders, with the professional musicians playing along with the students. Westfield is also very proud of seventh-grade trombonist, Colby Bills, who was chosen to conduct the selection "On Wisconsin" for the concert. Colby is the son of Kendra and Jack Bills.
