Dan truly loved being in the outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, spending countless hours on Lake Erie with his grandfather, Marshall Newell, catching yellow pike. He caught numerous trophy muskies and northern pike out of Cassadaga Lake, while living by the lake for 29 years. He also loved playing and being competitive in many sports including softball, basketball, bowling and golf. The New York Yankees and the Buffalo Bills were his favorite sports teams.
Dan had a 42-year career with the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Department, working as a full-time road patrol officer, in the civil division, and as a part-time court security officer until March of 2013, when he resigned due to health reasons. He loved his family. Being a good example to his sons was one of his strong traits. He will be remembered for his wonderful smile, his kind words, and never-ending willingness to help others. Dan was well respected by those who knew him.
