CHEEKTOWAGA-In its first year as a combined swimming and diving team, Frewsburg-Southwestern was able to finish in first place at the Section 6 Class C Championships at Maryvale High School on Saturday.
The team picked up 405 points-which was far and away the most of any of the 14 teams competing- while Panama was able to post 209.5 in a fourth-place finish.
In the Class A Championships Jamestown ended its meet in fifth place behind No. 1 Clarence with 185.5.
Jordan Powers of Frewsburg-Southwestern continued his brilliant year in the pool as a double winner in the 50- and 100-meter freestyle races, with both times earning him a state championship qualification.
Powers posted a 47.33 in the 100 which was good for 20 points for Frewsburg-Southwestern and picked up another 20 in the 50 free with a time of 21.57-a full second ahead of the second place finisher.
In the 200 freestyle, Tage Johnson was the winner for Frewsburg-Southwestern with a time of 1:56.33 and teammate Jacob Cotter was second with 1:57.03.
Cole Gregory added another 20 points after posting a 1:09.23 in the 100 breaststroke for another first while Frewsburg-Southwestern also took home the 400 freestyle relay title with the team of Josh Peterson, Powers, Cotter, and Shawn McDonald in 3:24.37.
Panama's Ray Fortney notched a second place finish in the 1-meter dive with 357.35 points.
Jamestown's Matt Marsh will also be competing at the state level after posting a qualifying time of 21.98 in the 50 freestyle-a fourth place finish.
Marsh also came in second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.11.
