Gordon R. Wheeler, 87, of Panama, died Saturday (Feb. 1, 2014) in the Presbyterian Home in Johnstown, Pa.
He was born March 7, 1926, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Henry and Julia Honaker Wheeler.
He began his career as a truck driver as an independent owner/operator in 1952. He later sold his truck and freight rights to John Cochran of Erie, Pa., the owner of Lyon Transportation Co., and continued to work for Lyon until his retirement in 1986.

Mr. Wheeler was a life member of the Lakewood Rod & Gun Club, and was a past president of both the Harmony Conservation Club and the Teamsters Lo-cal 649 Retirees Club.
A hard worker all his life, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping.
Surviving are three sons: Dennis G. Wheeler of Jamestown, Gordon S. Wheeler of Binghamton, N.Y., and Dale (Rita Wilson) Wheeler of Indiana; a daughter, Dorothy (Robert) Cochran of Kennedy; six grandchildren: Rachel (Matt) Steffan of West Henrietta, N.Y., Rebecca Wheeler of Falconer, Sara Wheeler of New York City, Stephanie Bemis of Jamestown, Rosanne (Chad) Nelson of Kennedy and Charity Nuse of Jamestown; seven great-grandchildren: Tyler Bemis, Annessa Trask, Korbyn Nelson, Jerecho Johnson and Erick Pettibon, all of Jamestown, Sophie Nelson of Kennedy, and Will Steffan of West Henrietta, N.Y.; a brother, Jack Wheeler of Panama; a sister, Demaris Munson of Jamestown; and his companion and caregiver, Donna Anderson of Johnstown, Pa.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Olson Wheeler, whom he married in April of 1947, and who died Sept. 10, 1985; and by many brothers and sisters, including Rose Sager, who died in 2006.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Powers, Present & Sixbey Funeral Home. The Rev. Donald Ray will officiate. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery.
