Russell A. Putney, 86, of 18 West Terrace Ave., Lakewood, died at 4 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 25, 2014) in his home.
He was born Sept. 25, 1927, in Buffalo, the son of Dr. Willis Henry Putney and Irene Osborn Putney. He was a graduate of the University of Buffalo, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration.
A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, he served from 1951-1953 with the Medical Corps in Germany.
Prior to retiring, he had been employed as the Security Supervisor of White Consolidated Industries in Cleveland, Ohio. In earlier years he was the director of safety and security for Nationwide Insurance Co. in Syracuse, N.Y. and Columbus, Ohio.
Following his retirement, he loved to drive visitors around the Chautauqua Region and to Chautauqua Institution. He also kept busy by serving in various positions with the Packard Estates Homeowners Association.
He was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, and was a charter member of the United Church of Christ on Bayberry in Liverpool, N.Y. He was a former member of the Lakewood Rod and Gun Club.
An avid train enthusiast, he loved traveling, boating, and Dachshund dogs. He was especially proud of his grandson's achievements.
He is survived by a daughter, Leslie A. (Thomas) West, a grandson, Taylor T. West, and his beloved companion, Dorothy E. Reinstetle, all of Lakewood; and by a brother, Bruce Putney of East Aurora.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey Meyer Putney, whom he married in 1954 in Buffalo, and who died March 19, 1998.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Pastor Timothy Hoyer will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in East Aurora, N.Y.
