Lt. Col. Michael Christatos, 102, of 78 Belden Road, Carmel, N.Y., died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, in the home of his daughter Elizabeth Christatos Newburg in Frewsburg.
He was valedictorian of his high school class and then went on to City University of New York on scholarship, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering.
He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army as an intelligence officer serving from 194046 and then in the reserve for 25 years. After serving in the service, he became a successful selfemployed business man in the New York City area.
Surviving are three children: Elizabeth (Jerry) ChristatosNewburg, with whom he made his home, Michael (Leslie) Christatos of Carmel, N.Y., and George (Nancy) Christatos of Booten, N.J.; a stepson Michael (Lisa) BenDror of Ohio; six grandchildren: Tiffany (Ben) Mills of New Jersey, Kathleen Christatos of New York City, Michael Tyler Christatos of New York City, Aubrie Newburg of Frewsburg, Chystal CybulskiNewburg of Erie, Pa., and Kayla Cybulski Newburg of Frewsburg.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Antonia Bradley Christatos in 1964; his second wife, Edna Caldwell Christatos in 2001; two brothers: George and Emanuel Christatos; and two sisters: Thaloula and Georgia Christatos.
The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. today at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. The Rev. George S. Zervos will officiate.
Visitation will not be observed.
Burial will be at Mt Olivet Cemetery, Queens, NY.
