ELLINGTON - The Farman Free Library will bring two well-known authors to Ellington, virtually, this month.
On Wednesday, Scholastic, a publishing company that focuses on educational materials for schools, is hosting a webcast where Jeff Kinney, creator of the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" series and Dav Pilkey, creator of the "Captain Underpants" series, work together in front of a live audience to create a story mashup. Kinney and Pilkey will create six story panels, and leave the audience to finish the story. Students in grades two through eight are encouraged to participate.
Since the webcast will go live at 1 p.m. and many students will be in school, the library will provide a later showing.
"I wanted to give the kids an opportunity to participate," said Arissa Hitchcock, library director. She also said that webcasts tend to be short. Students need only to bring creativity; the library will supply the markers and paper.
Contest winners will be selected based on clarity of thought, execution and creativity, according to the Scholastic website. Winners will be notified by March 13.
Ten runners-up will receive their own graphic storytelling extravaganza book collections. One grand-prize winner will have his or her entry framed with the existing panels autographed by the authors.
For those unable to attend the library's showing, a recording of the webcast, entry forms and contest rules can be found at www.scholastic.com/kpwebcast. All submissions are due by Feb. 14.
The Farman Free Library is located at 760 Thornton Road, Ellington, NY 14732.
